Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Controlled substances are drugs that have the potential for dependence or abuse and are regulated by the DEA. These drugs fall into one of five categories known as “schedules.” The schedule classes include:
- Schedule I: Drugs that have no inherent medicinal uses, including heroin, cocaine or MDMA
- Schedule II: Drugs that have medicinal properties but have high abuse potentials like morphine, oxycodone, or fentanyl
- Schedule III through V: Drugs with moderate to low potential for abuse like anabolic steroids, codeine, or Xanax.
Unused controlled substances must be disposed of under rules established by the DEA and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) final rule for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals. MLI Environmental can offer approved DEA disposal of controlled substances. We can assist with secure destruction, and provide all necessary paperwork so your facility can comply with DEA and EPA standards and regulations.
