There is a new gold extraction technique that reduces cost from approximately $1500 per kilogram to $70 per kilogram, using acetic acid and an oxidant. This technique does not create the toxics involved with cyanide leaching and burning. Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada believe this will be a much better method of breaking down e-waste material captured for recycling.
The process which can take as little as 10 seconds allegedly leaves other metals such as copper, nickel, and iron intact.
